Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum IELTS score to study in New Zealand from Bangladesh?

For Bachelor’s programs, most universities require IELTS 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5. For Master’s programs, the minimum is generally IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Specialised programs like Medicine or Law may require 7.0+. PTE equivalents are 50 (Bachelor’s) and 58 (Master’s). The score must be met before your visa is approved.

How much money do I need in my bank account for a NZ student visa?
Immigration NZ requires proof of NZD 20,000 per year for living expenses, plus full tuition fees. For most single Bangladeshi students, this means maintaining approximately BDT 60–70 Lakh in liquid bank assets for a minimum of 5–6 months before applying. Students with a spouse should show around BDT 80–90 Lakh. Avoid sudden large deposits — maintain a consistent balance over time.

Can I apply with a study gap?
Yes. A study gap does not automatically disqualify you. However, you must explain the gap logically through your Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Genuine Student statement — referencing work experience, training, family reasons, or other documented activities. Meiji Education provides expert SOP writing support to address this effectively.
What is the Genuine Student (GS) statement?
Introduced by Immigration New Zealand in 2024, the Genuine Student statement is now compulsory for all international student visa applications. It must clearly explain why you have chosen New Zealand, what you plan to study, why this course aligns with your future plans, and your intention to return home after completing studies. A weak GS statement is one of the most common reasons for visa refusals.
How long does the NZ student visa take to process?
Normal processing takes 3–7 weeks (20–35 working days). During peak intake periods (May–August), it can take 9 weeks or more. We recommend applying at least 3 months before your course start date. Applications that are complete, consistent, and well-documented typically process faster than those requiring follow-up.

Can I work while studying in New Zealand?
Yes. From November 2025, international students can work up to 25 hours per week during academic sessions. During semester breaks and holidays, full-time work is permitted. The average wage in NZ is NZD 22–40 per hour depending on the role, which can significantly offset living expenses. PhD students are eligible for unlimited working hours.

What are the post-study work rights in New Zealand?
Graduates with Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degrees from New Zealand institutions are eligible for a 3-year open Post-Study Work Visa. This allows you to work for any employer anywhere in NZ. It provides a genuine opportunity to gain professional experience and potentially progress toward permanent residency, especially in high-demand occupations listed on NZ’s Green List.

What intakes are available for New Zealand universities?
Most New Zealand universities have two main intakes: February (start of academic year) and July (mid-year intake). Some programs and polytechnics also offer November/October starts. For February 2026, you should have begun your application by October–November 2025. For July 2026, the application deadline is typically around April 2026. Contact Meiji Education to confirm specific deadlines for your chosen university and program.
